Samsung Galaxy M17 5G — best screen and longest support
The M17 5G is the pick if you want a phone that still feels current in four years. Its 6.7-inch Super AMOLED panel is the nicest display in this price band — deeper blacks and better outdoor visibility than the LCD rivals — and it carries a 50MP main camera with optical stabilisation, which helps low-light and video. The headline, though, is software: Samsung promises up to six OS upgrades and six years of security patches, far beyond what POCO, Redmi or Vivo offer at this price. The Exynos 1330 chip is the trade-off: fine for messaging, streaming, UPI and casual games, but not a gaming chip, and the refresh rate is lower than rivals.
Good: best AMOLED display here, OIS camera, unmatched update policy, clean One UI. Watch: modest chipset; lower refresh rate than rivals; 25W charging is the slowest in this list.

If your main complaint about phones is that they die by evening, the T4x solves it. The 6,500 mAh battery is the largest here and realistically gets most people through two days of normal use; 44W charging refills it quickly enough. Vivo also fits up to 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of faster UFS storage on the higher variant, so apps reopen from memory and large games install without the wait you get on cheaper eMMC storage. The screen is a 120Hz LCD rather than AMOLED — bright and smooth, but colours and contrast are a step behind the M17 and M7 Pro.

The M7 Pro is the one to get if you play games or just want the phone to feel quick for the longest. Its Dimensity 7025‑Ultra is the fastest chip in this group, it pairs that with a genuine AMOLED 120Hz screen with high peak brightness, and it charges at 45W — roughly 0 to 50% in around 20 minutes. Battery is a healthy 5,110 mAh. The compromises are the ones POCO usually makes: an ad-supported software layer (MIUI/HyperOS with recommendations you can mostly turn off) and a plastic frame.
Good: fastest chipset here, bright AMOLED 120Hz panel, 45W charging, 50MP camera. Watch: software shows ads/recommendations out of the box; shorter update commitment than Samsung.

The Redmi 15 5G is built around size: a 6.9-inch 144Hz screen and a 7,000 mAh battery in a 217g body. If you mostly watch video, read and browse, and don’t mind a large phone, nothing else here matches it for screen time per charge. The Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 is an everyday chip rather than a gaming one, and the panel is LCD, not AMOLED — but it’s a sharp FHD+ LCD and the high refresh rate keeps scrolling smooth. IP64 rating adds some splash protection.
Good: largest screen and battery combination, 144Hz, IP64, expandable storage. Watch: big and heavy; LCD not AMOLED; entry-level chipset; base variant has just 4GB RAM — buy 6GB or 8GB.

Just outside this budget, the Moto G96 5G (around ₹17,999) is a clear step up: a Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, a curved 6.67-inch pOLED 144Hz screen at up to 1,600 nits, a 50MP Sony camera with OIS, stereo speakers, IP68 water resistance and near-stock Android. If your budget has any give, it’s worth the extra.

What to look for in a 5G phone under ₹15,000
- Chipset: a MediaTek Dimensity 7025/7300 or Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 class chip is the current sweet spot. Anything more than about two years old will feel slow within the phone’s life. More on this in our phone processors guide.
- Display: an AMOLED panel is worth prioritising at this price — better contrast, deeper blacks, lower battery use at dark settings. A 120Hz refresh rate is now standard; 90Hz is acceptable, 60Hz is not.
- Battery and charging: 5,000 mAh is the floor; 6,000–7,000 mAh options exist. Charging ranges from 25W (Samsung) to 45W (POCO). See our battery and charging explainer.
- RAM and storage: get at least 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage. Prefer UFS storage over eMMC (faster app installs and loading); check whether there’s a microSD slot if you store a lot of media.
- Software support: Samsung leads this segment by a wide margin (six years). POCO, Redmi and Vivo typically promise two OS upgrades and a few years of security patches. If you keep phones a long time, this matters more than a spec-sheet number.
- Build and water resistance: look for at least an IP64 rating and a Gorilla Glass (or equivalent) front. Most phones here are plastic-framed, which is fine.
- 5G bands: confirm the phone supports the n78 band — the main 5G band used by Indian carriers — plus n1 and n28. All four picks above do.

Is it worth buying a 5G phone under ₹15,000, or should I spend more?
For most people this budget is enough. You get a modern chipset, 5G, a good screen and all-day battery. Spending ₹18,000–₹22,000 mainly buys a better camera, a nicer build (metal frame, curved glass) and stronger water resistance — useful, but not essential for everyday use.
AMOLED or LCD at this price?
AMOLED, if the rest of the phone suits you. It looks noticeably better for video and photos and uses less power with dark themes. Among these picks, the Samsung M17 and POCO M7 Pro have AMOLED; the Vivo T4x and Redmi 15 use high-refresh LCDs, which are still perfectly usable.
