Apple did something unusual in September 2026. Instead of quietly dropping the price of last year’s iPhones when the iPhone 18 Pro arrived, it raised them — the iPhone 17 is now ₹17,000 dearer than at launch, and the iPhone 16 went up too. That changes the maths. This guide is about which iPhone actually makes sense to buy in India right now, at each budget, and which ones to walk past.

Which iPhone is right for you

iPhone 17 — the one to buy for most people

For years the advice was “buy last year’s iPhone and save”. The September price revision broke that. The iPhone 16 is now ₹89,900 and the iPhone 17 is ₹99,900 — a ₹10,000 gap — and for that ₹10,000 the 17 gives you a 120Hz ProMotion display (the first time a standard iPhone has had one), a second 48MP camera that gives you a real 2x telephoto-quality crop, a bigger 6.3-inch screen with slimmer bezels, and the newer A19 chip. The 120Hz screen alone is the kind of upgrade you notice every time you scroll, and it’s the one thing you can’t add later. Unless your budget genuinely stops at ₹90,000, this is the phone.

Buy it if: you want one iPhone for the next 4–5 years and you’ll notice a smooth screen and better zoom.   Skip it if: ₹99,900 is a stretch — the 17e does the essentials for ₹20,000 less.

iPhone 17e — the cheapest new iPhone, with honest trade-offs

The 17e is Apple’s ₹79,900 entry model, and it’s a smarter phone than the “budget iPhone” tag suggests. It runs the same A19 chip as the iPhone 17 (very slightly downclocked), starts at 256GB, uses Apple’s own C1X modem, and has the longest battery life of any iPhone in the lineup — around 26 hours of video in Apple’s own test. Where Apple cut costs is visible, though: it keeps the old notch instead of the Dynamic Island, the screen is 60Hz and dimmer outdoors, and there’s only one rear camera — no ultrawide, no macro. If you mostly message, watch, pay and take the odd photo, none of that will bother you. If you photograph a lot or use the phone outdoors in harsh sun, spend the extra ₹20,000 on the 17.

Buy it if: you want years of iOS updates and Apple’s ecosystem for the lowest price, and cameras aren’t your priority.   Skip it if: you take a lot of photos, or a 2026 phone with a notch and a 60Hz screen will annoy you.

iPhone 16 — buy it only when the discount is real

The iPhone 16 is a good phone that Apple has priced into an awkward corner. At ₹89,900 list, it sits ₹10,000 below the iPhone 17 but gives up the 120Hz screen, the bigger display and the second 48MP camera, and it’s on the older A18 chip. It does have things the 17e lacks — the Dynamic Island, a proper ultrawide camera, a brighter screen, the Camera Control button. The case for the 16 only works if you find it discounted to ₹72,000–₹78,000 with bank and exchange offers, which does happen during sale events. At full price, buy the 17 or the 17e instead.

Buy it if: a sale drops it near ₹75,000 and you want the ultrawide camera the 17e doesn’t have.   Skip it if: it’s at or near list price — the 17 is a clearly better phone for ₹10,000 more.

iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max — when you don’t want to compromise

The Pro models are where Apple puts the things enthusiasts actually care about: a triple 48MP camera system with a longer 8x telephoto, an LTPO screen that runs from 1Hz to 120Hz (so the always-on display barely costs battery), the newest A20 Pro chip, and the titanium build. The 18 Pro starts at ₹1,64,900; the Pro Max is around ₹1,74,900 and mainly buys you a bigger screen and the longest battery in any iPhone. You’re paying roughly ₹65,000 more than the iPhone 17 — only worth it if photography, video work or “I keep my phone for six years and want the best” describes you. For everyone else, the 17 covers 90% of what the Pro does.

Buy it if: the camera is a genuine reason you buy phones, or you want the maximum lifespan.   Skip it if: you’re buying it for status — the 17 looks and works nearly the same day to day.

iPhone Air — a specific phone for a specific person

The iPhone Air is the thinnest iPhone Apple has made, at ₹1,49,900. It has the 120Hz screen and the fast A19 Pro chip, but to get that thin, Apple used a single rear camera and a smaller battery — it’s the shortest-lasting iPhone in the range. It’s a lovely object to hold. It is not the sensible choice at that price: the iPhone 17 costs ₹50,000 less and does more, and ₹15,000 more gets you the 18 Pro. Buy the Air only if a genuinely thin, light phone is the thing you want most and you’ve made peace with the compromises.

Buy it if: thin-and-light is your single top priority and battery anxiety doesn’t bother you.   Skip it if: you want value — almost every other iPhone is a better deal.

Buying an iPhone in India: things worth knowing

• Don’t buy the iPhone 15 or older as “new”. Apple India has stopped selling them. Units still listed as new are usually old stock or grey-market imports — you lose the India warranty and Apple Store service. A used iPhone 15 in good condition from a trusted seller is fine; a “sealed” one at a suspiciously low price usually isn’t.
• Storage is the upgrade you can’t undo. The 17 and 17e start at 256GB, which is enough for most people. The iPhone 16 still starts at 128GB — if you shoot a lot of video or keep years of photos on the device, budget for the 256GB version.
• Work out the effective price. HDFC, ICICI and SBI card offers during sale events typically give ₹4,000–₹6,000 instant discount, and Apple’s own exchange or a Flipkart/Amazon exchange can add more. The headline price is rarely what you pay.
• No-cost EMI is genuinely no-cost on iPhones through most banks during festive periods — the interest is absorbed as a discount. Outside those windows, check whether it’s “no-cost” or just “low-cost”.
• AppleCare+ is sold in India now and can be added within 60 days of purchase. For a ₹1,00,000+ phone it’s worth considering; for the 17e, self-insuring is reasonable.

iPhone or Android at this price?

If you’re not already tied to iMessage, AirPods and a Mac, it’s a fair question. At ₹80,000–₹1,00,000, a Google Pixel 11 or Pixel 11a gives you seven years of updates like the iPhone does, a better zoom camera on the standard model, and Google’s AI features.
