Galaxy Z Fold8 — the quick verdict
A genuinely lighter, better-built Fold with a new 4:3 unfolded screen, the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and a slightly larger battery. It is an evolution rather than a reinvention — if you own a Fold7 you can comfortably skip it, but coming from a Fold5 or older, or from a regular slab phone, it is the most “normal” a big foldable has felt.

What’s new on the Galaxy Z Fold8
- Lighter and thinner. At about 201 g, Samsung calls it the lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet — close to a normal large phone rather than a brick.
- New screen proportions. A roughly 5.5-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch main display that opens to a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is a better shape for reading, documents and split-screen apps.
- Flex Titanium structure. A titanium-based layer under the folding display, meant to keep the panel thin while improving durability and making the crease less visible over time.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: the new flagship foldable

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra sits above the standard Fold8 with a larger 8-inch main display, a full flagship camera system — a 200 MP main sensor, a 50 MP ultrawide and a 10 MP 3x telephoto — and a bigger 5,000 mAh battery. It uses the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 platform as the Galaxy S26 Ultra, is around 4.1 mm thick unfolded (Samsung’s thinnest Fold), and weighs about 215 g.
It went on sale globally from 7 August 2026 at $2,099.99 in the US. Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra in India from ₹1,99,999 for 12 GB/256 GB, with 12 GB/512 GB at ₹2,19,999 and 16 GB/1 TB at ₹2,59,999. Should you upgrade?
- From a Galaxy Z Fold7: No real need. The changes — lighter body, new screen shape, newer chip — are nice but incremental.
- From a Fold5 or older foldable: Worth it. The weight, durability and battery improvements add up, and the 4:3 screen is a meaningful usability change.
- From a regular flagship (Galaxy S, iPhone): Only if you genuinely want the big inner screen for reading, multitasking or media. If you don’t, a slab flagship gives you a better camera and battery for a lot less money.
- Considering the Ultra: Choose it for the larger screen and the proper telephoto camera. Otherwise the standard Fold8 covers most of what makes a foldable good.
